VELUX Skylight Installation & Replacement in New Jersey

VELUX skylight installation and replacement by a VELUX certified installer.

Skylights

A skylight brings daylight into rooms that no window can reach — stairwells, bathrooms, hallways, and rooms under a roof plane. Done properly it is one of the biggest changes you can make to how a room feels. Done badly it becomes the leak you chase for years.

Alte Roofing & Siding is a **VELUX certified installer**. We install and replace VELUX skylights across northern and central New Jersey, and because we are roofers first, the skylight is installed as part of the roof rather than cut into it afterwards.

Why the Flashing Matters More Than the Skylight

Most skylight leaks are not failures of the skylight. They are failures of the flashing — the layered metal that ties the unit into the surrounding roofing so water runs around it rather than under it.

VELUX supplies engineered flashing kits matched to the roofing material and the way the unit is mounted. We install those kits as specified rather than substituting generic flashing or sealant, which is the usual reason a skylight starts leaking a few winters later.

Skylight Replacement

If an existing skylight is leaking, fogged between the panes, cracked, or simply decades old, replacement is usually more sensible than repeated sealing. Older units often predate current flashing systems entirely.

Signs it is time to replace a skylight:

  • Water staining on the ceiling or light shaft
  • Condensation or fogging between the glass panes
  • Cracked, crazed, or yellowed acrylic domes
  • Draughts or noticeable heat loss around the unit
  • A seal or frame that has been repaired more than once
  • Visible rust or deterioration in the existing flashing

Replacing a Skylight During a Roof Replacement

The most economical time to replace a skylight is while the roof around it is already open. The flashing has to be disturbed for a roof replacement regardless, so pairing the two avoids paying twice for the same access.

If your roof is nearing replacement and the skylights are original, we will tell you that during the inspection rather than install new units into roofing that is about to come off.

Fixed, Venting & Solar-Powered Skylights

VELUX makes several types, and the right one depends on the room rather than on preference alone.

  • Fixed skylights — daylight only, for stairwells and spaces where ventilation is not needed
  • Manual venting — opens to release heat and moisture, suited to reachable positions
  • Solar-powered venting — opens on a solar-charged motor with a remote, for high or awkward positions
  • Blinds and accessories — factory blinds that fit the unit rather than aftermarket covers

Rooms That Benefit Most

Bathrooms and kitchens gain ventilation as well as light, which helps with the moisture that causes problems elsewhere in a house. Stairwells and interior hallways often have no exterior wall at all, so a skylight is the only way to bring daylight in.

Rooms directly under a roof plane — converted attics, bonus rooms over garages, additions — are usually the strongest candidates, because the roof is the ceiling.

Why Use a Certified Installer

A skylight is a hole cut in a weather barrier. The unit itself is the straightforward part; integrating it with the roofing system is where the work is.

As a GAF Master Elite® and President’s Club roofing contractor, we are already working on the roof assembly every day. That means the skylight, the flashing, the underlayment, and the surrounding shingles are handled as one job by one crew — not split between a window installer and whoever fixes the roof afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do skylights leak?

A properly installed, properly flashed skylight should not leak. Most leaks trace back to flashing that was improvised rather than the manufacturer-supplied kit, or to an old unit whose seals have failed. We install VELUX units with the matched VELUX flashing kit for the roofing material.

How long does a skylight installation take?

A straightforward replacement of an existing unit is often completed in a day. A new installation takes longer because an opening has to be framed and a light shaft finished, and the timeframe depends on the roof, the ceiling construction, and the interior work involved.

How much does a skylight cost in New Jersey?

Cost depends on the unit type (fixed, venting, or solar-powered), the size, the roofing material, whether an opening already exists, and the interior finishing required. An inspection and a property-specific estimate are the only accurate way to price it.

Can you replace a skylight without replacing the roof?

Yes. A skylight can be replaced on its own, with the surrounding roofing opened and reinstated around the new flashing. If the roof is close to the end of its life, we will say so, because doing both at once avoids disturbing the same area twice.

Is it cheaper to replace skylights during a roof replacement?

Usually, yes. The flashing has to be disturbed during a roof replacement anyway, so combining the work avoids paying separately for the same access.

What is a solar-powered skylight?

A venting skylight that opens and closes on a solar-charged motor, operated by remote. It suits positions that are hard to reach by hand, and it needs no wiring run to the unit.

Is Alte Roofing a VELUX certified installer?

Yes. Alte Roofing & Siding is a VELUX certified installer, in addition to being a GAF Master Elite® and GAF President’s Club roofing contractor.

Do you repair leaking skylights?

Yes. We inspect the unit and, importantly, the flashing and surrounding roofing, because the leak often originates outside the skylight itself. We then explain whether a repair is realistic or whether replacement is the better option.
